How to Fix Chronic Fatigue

The way to address chronic fatigue depends on its cause. There is no single supplement, sleep routine or exercise programme that fixes every case. Begin with a clinical assessment, protect basic needs and adapt activity to what your body can currently tolerate. NHLBI: assessing sleep deficiency NICE: ME/CFS diagnosis and management
Establish what needs investigating
Explain when fatigue began, whether an illness preceded it, how it affects ordinary tasks and what happens after exertion. Include sleep, pain, mood, medicines and other symptoms.
Ask what possibilities are being considered, which tests are useful, and when you should return. If you have already been assessed, bring the results and describe what has changed rather than restarting the story from memory.
Treat a cause when one is identified
Management may involve treating a sleep disorder, correcting a confirmed deficiency, reviewing medication or addressing another condition. The plan should fit the diagnosis and your circumstances. Do not independently stop prescribed medicine or treat a suspected deficiency with high doses.
A treatment can take time to assess, but continuing symptoms still deserve review. Agree what improvement would look like in daily life.
Respect post-exertional worsening
If activity produces a delayed crash, tell the clinician. For ME/CFS, NICE advises against programmes that prescribe fixed incremental increases in exercise. Energy management should fit the person’s limits, including physical, cognitive, emotional and social activity. NICE: ME/CFS diagnosis and management
Pacing is not a cure guarantee. It is an approach to reducing repeated overexertion while care is tailored to you. CDC: managing ME/CFS
Build practical support now
Break a demanding errand into separate tasks, ask for a lift, sit for food preparation or reduce meetings. Choose adjustments that preserve essentials without using your best moment to overcommit the next day.
Keep a short note of what helps. An elaborate tracker is optional; it should not consume the capacity it is meant to support.
Keep the review open
Seek urgent care for new severe symptoms. Otherwise, arrange follow-up if fatigue persists, worsens or the plan is not workable. Better Next Days can help organise questions, sleep opportunities and requests for help. It should sit alongside the clinical plan rather than become another condition you must fulfil before receiving care.
